Between Midnight and the Promised Land

Inventions Come In All Colors
Sloan Museum

Did you know that the ironing board, traffic light, gas mask, and pacemakers were all invented by African Americans? This special exhibit reflects the challenges, achievements, and lasting contributions of famous, and not so famous, ethnic inventors. The exhibit is produced by Sloan Museum's Junior Docents (6th grade students from Pierce School) and on Saturday, February 12 from 1 to 3pm visitors can join them as they highlight some of these inventions in a creative display.

Belle Tells the Truth:
The Narrative of a Northern Slave

A musical drama about the life of Isabella Baumfree, also known as Sojourner Truth. This original work was birthed out of the personal memoirs of one of the most famous abolitionist of the 18th century. Written by Sylvia Pitman and featuring: Creative Expressions Dance Studio; Sheila Miller Graham, Choreographer; The Flint Community Ensemble; Harrison McGee, Director; Flint School of Performing Arts faculty members and guest artists from the community.

Their Eyes Were Watching God

This is the story of Janie Crawford's evolving selfhood through three marriages. ìTwo things everybody's got to do for theyselves. They got to go to God, and they got to find out about livin' for theyselves.î While vested in black folk traditions, this lyrical work also addresses the universal theme of the search for self-realization.

Having Our Say: The First 100 Years

This film is based on the true story of the Delany sisters, who lived well beyond the age of 100 after having built successful careers at a time when most women, and most African Americans, were being denied opportunities. Before the film, join us as two professional storytellers portray the Delany sisters at a tea party inside the museum.
