Martin Luther King Jr. Day January 16

The Flint Institute of Arts (FIA) is pleased to partner with the Flint Public Library (FPL) in providing FREE activities in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

  • FIA, 12:00-6:00pm
    Galleries open free of charge.
  • FPL, 1:00-3:00pm
    Martin Luther King Jr. Day Drop-In Craft. Children and families make and take a craft that celebrates African American history.
  • FPL, 2:00pm
    Speaker Dr. Raymond Gist, first African American president of the American Dental Association. Master of Ceremonies Erycka Hunter, director, Human Relations Commission, City of Flint. Musical Guest Mott Community College Jazz Trio. Presentation by the Gamma Delta Kudos and the Kappa Leadership League under the mentorship of John Rhymes.
  • FIA’s Isabel Hall, 4:00pm
    Inspirational Performance by the Gamma Delta Kudos and the Kappa Leadership League.
  • FIA’s Art School Studios, 4:00–6:00pm
    Create and display your own sign of peace using a simple message and paper hearts to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy.
  • FIA’s Isabel Hall, 4:30–6:00pm
    Listen to the music of Eric Majied, “Mr. Majestic,” vibraphone, while enjoying refreshments and the community conversation!

In a small mining town in the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo, bar owner Mama Nadi’s establishment has simple rules—no arguments, no politics, no guns. But as tales of atrocities spread and tensions between rebels and government militia rise, Mama is forced to reassess her business priorities and personal loyalties. In this 2009 Pulitzer Prize-winning play, the realities of life in civil war provide the ultimate test of the human spirit.
$7 ticket includes the Off the Press Series staged reading, a talk-back with the performers and light refreshments.

In the spirit of Dr. King’s legacy to combat poverty and hunger, please consider bringing a home/health care product such as detergent, toothpaste, dish soap, etc. Items will be collected at Buick Automotive Gallery, Longway Planetarium, and Sloan Museum through February 29, and donated to the North End Food Kitchen.
African American storytellers will be located at Sloan Museum throughout the month of February.
